1985:
Thatcher meets with Garret FitzGerald, Prime Minister of the Republic
of Ireland, centre, with, from left to right, ministers Peter Barry,
Douglas Hurd, Dick Spring and Geoffrey Howe, prior to signing the
Anglo-Irish agreement. It was the first time the British government had
given the Republic of Ireland a role in determining the governance of
Northern Ireland.

Although Thatcher was an opponent of sanctions against South Africa, she
was opposed to apartheid and refused to visit the country until Nelson
Mandela was freed from jail.
